I often find that the best games come from a meshing of derivative genre’s to create a new and original experience. That method of thinking is in full effect with Sol Trader, described as a “fusion of Elite, Asteroids & Dwarf Fortress: 200 years of procedural history, characters & intrigue to discover each new game.”

The game is in development by Chris Parsons, a former AAA games developer turned software consultant and entrepreneur who has been working on the game in his spare time for the past three years. As you can probably tell from the screenshots, the game looks rough, but the underlying architecture to it is what gets the heart racing.

I’ve always had a fascination with world generation, or in this case, galaxy generation. From the looks of things, Chris has developed quite the system for Sol Trader, with “two centuries of characters, events and interactions” being developed in preparation for a new game.

It’s the little touches that make Sol Trader an appealing prospect to me. There’s the standard space RPG type stuff in there, buying new ships/weapons, fighting, trading, but it’s added on top of a rich layer of world development and political intrigue that will hopefully make every play through unique.

The game is up to £6,384 pledged of its £20,000 goal with 23 days to go, so it looks like a safe bet to get the funding it needs. Ain’t that the smegging truth!
